The Longhorns hockey team will hold its first tryout for the upcoming season on September 23rd at the new Northcross Ice Rink at 2525 Anderson Lane,Austin. The first team tryout session will begin at 9:15pm and is open to all full-time UT undergrad and grad students.

The Longhorns are pleased to announce that veteran Coaches Bob Smith and Keith O'Brien will return to help guide the team from behind the bench for the coming season. Ass't. Coach Cameron MacDonald will leave the coaching staff to pursue his graduate studies in the Fall semester.

The Longhorns are pleased to announce that Jim White,a native of the Philadelphia and upstate New York regions and longtime player, has agreed to join the Texas coaching staff. Jim offers over 20 years of hockey coaching experience at every youth travel level including Midgets and High School teams. Since 1996 he has been a very active member of the Austin hockey coaching community leading various teams to a State Bantam Championship, two regular season Bantam first place finishes and a Western Regional Silver Stick Championship. Jim is recognized as a Master Level Coach by USA Hockey and he has authored a fine half ice hockey drill book. Jim is employed with IBM, has two Black Belts in Chinese Martial Arts and is married with two sons. The Longhorns are also pleased to announce that David McShane has agreed to join the Texas coaching staff for the coming season. David started playing hockey over 50 years ago at the young age of 3 in Ottawa,Canada and advanced through the youth travel leagues there and in Montreal. Given a chance to play Juniors in Monteal he instead went to the University in New Brunswick(BBA '75)to pursue his dream of professional football. A multi-sport athlete he continued to play and coach hockey during college. Although offered a professional try-out, David put aside football to pursue a financial services career where he worked internationally,eventually returning to Portland,Oregon. In Portland he returned to hockey,playing for the Portland Royals in the late 1970's. A serious knee injury ended his career but he has played on adult teams ever since, most recently winning the USA Hockey National Championship in 2006 as a member of the 50+ team. David has spent his whole professional career in leadership roles mentoring and coaching his teammates and together creating great success. He returned to coaching in 2006 and helped guide his High School team to its most successful season in years and the Austin area championship game.The 2007-08 season saw his High School team continue its winning ways and he added the duties of head coach of the Austin Bantam Travel team, who clinched first place during the regular season with a 20-1-1 record. David also earned his MBA degree form the University of Pittsburgh in 1991 and is a Certified Financial Planner(CFP). He is married,the CEO of Opulent Imports LLC and active member of the Austin hockey coaching community. The Longhorns are looking forward to working with both Jim and David to help build a winning effort for the 2008-09 season.
