Game Recaps: Longhorns sweep Northwestern to improve to 6-0

The Longhorns continued their hot start to the season by sweeping Northwestern (ACHA D3) by the scores of 9-1 Friday night, and 10-1 Saturday night. 

9/28: Northwestern (1) vs Texas (9)- It was a pair of special teams goals that got the Longhorns started in the first period Friday, the first of two non-conference conference games against Northwestern. Nolan Burdett scored his 6th goal of the season shorthanded via a feed from Michael Fernandes, putting the Longhorns up 1-0 early in the game. Max Baryshevstev would later in the period score a power play goal with assists from Nic Samadian and Ethan Chun to put the Longhorns up 2-0 at the end of 1. 

Northwestern would score quickly to start the second period, cutting the deficit to one, but after that it was all Longhorns. Alec Pillar and Ryo Yoshida each scored within two minutes with assists from Garrett Cox to bring the Longhorn lead to 4-1. After that, the Longhorns controlled play before ultimately breaking through again with a goal by Nic Samadian, assisted by Joe Kurita, to increase the Longhorn lead to 5-1 going into the second intermission. 

In the first 5 minutes of the third period, the Longhorns would not be denied. Alec Pillar started the Longhorn run with an assist from Garret Cox and Steven Saiki. Pillar's line would follow up with another goal from freshman Shaan Greenberg, his third of the year, assisted by Cox and Pillar. Kevin Chen scored next off of a feed from Michael Fernandes, his second of the game, and Senior Ben Wallace, bringing the Longhorn lead to 8-1. Garrett Cox, who would finish with 5 points, scored his first goal of the game with six and a half minutes remaining assisted by Shaan Greenberg and Alec Pillar, his 5th point of the night as well, to bring the Longhorn lead to the final score of 9-1. 

Goaltender Sean Kuehn stopped 34 of 35 shots, bringing his goals against average to 2.33 for the season with a 93% save percentage. 


9/29: Northwestern (1) vs Texas (10)- While the Longhorns dominated the tempo and pace of play, they were unable to break through in the opening minutes of the game. Sophomore Nic Samadian started the Longhorns off with his second goal of the weekend on a great outlet pass, assisted by Captain Joe Kurita. Kurita continued the pace for the Longhorns offense, scoring the second goal of the night for the Longhorns, assisted by Alec Pillar and Garrett Cox. To finish the period, Freshman Shaan Greenberg took matters into his own hands- going end to end on Northwestern and scoring five hole to put the Longhorns up 3-0 going in to intermission. 

On the first shift of the second period, Sophomore Kevin Chen scored his second goal of the weekend, assisted by Michael Fernandes. Nolan Burdett answered next for the Longhorns to bring the lead to 5-0, assisted by defenseman Ben Wallace. From there, Ethan Chun scored two goals of his own with a pair of assists from Nolan Burdett, as well as Senior Steven Saiki and Shaan Greenberg. With 4:43 left in the second period, Northwestern scored their only goal of the game off of a turnover in the defensive zone to make the game 7-1 after two. 

Texas would cruise through the third period from there. Nolan Burdett and Shaan Greenberg both scored power play goals for the Longhorns with assists from Alec Pillar and Kevin Chen. Up 9-1 late in the third period, Garrett Cox scored a short handed goal with assists from Alec Pillar, his second playmaker of the weekend, and Joe Kurita- to bring the Longhorns to the final score of 10-1. 

Junior goaltender David Hutto won his third game of the season, stopping 44 of 45 shots in the game. 

Game Recaps: Longhorns offense off to hot start

The Texas Longhorns offense led the way to victory through the first 4 games, scoring a combined 41 goals. The Longhorns are off to their first 4-0 start since 2009-2010. 

9/15: Texas State (2) vs Texas (11)- It was a day of firsts for the Longhorns. The Texas Longhorns drew first blood in the 2017-2018 season with a goal from Sophomore Nolan Burdett, his first as a Texas Longhorn. Texas State eventually answered, and the result was a 1-1 tie to end the 1st Period. 

The Longhorns quickly responded in the 2nd period. Freshman Stewart Russell scored his first goal, followed by assistant captain Ethan Chun and Alec Pillar who was the third of four Longhorns to score their first career goal. Max Baryshevtsev and Nic Samadian also put two in the net in the second period to bring the Longhorn lead to 6-2. 

From there the Longhorns would pull away. Ethan Chun and Chris Bilec led the period off with two unassisted goals. Shaan Greenberg would later score his first goal as a Longhorn and finish the game with 1 goal and 3 assists. Bilec followed with his second of the game and Chun finished the game with the hat trick- the first Longhorn hat trick of the season. Goaltender Sean Kuehn turned in a good performance allowing only two goals on 28 shots. 


9/16: Texas (14) at Texas State (8)- Despite a slow start, the Longhorns offense continued where it left off in game two against Texas State at the Barn. Texas State led the game off with a 2-0 lead, however, it would not last for long. Captain Joe Kurita scored an unassisted goal, then Sophomore Kevin Chen answered with the tying goal off of a pass from Ethan Chun. The Longhorns and Bobcats would trade two more goals each with Garret Cox scoring unassisted and Nolan Burdett scoring on the power play. 

Texas State would start the 2nd period scoring two goals to bring their lead to 6-4. From there, it was all Longhorns, scoring five unanswered goals. Chris Bilec led off with a power play goal then Kevin Chen followed up with his second of the game. Senior defenseman Steven Saiki added two of his own before Joe Kurita scored the final Longhorn goal of the period with two minutes remaining to bring the score to 9-6 Longhorns. 

Texas continued to pour on the goals in the 3rd period with Kurita completing the hat trick followed by Ethan Chun's 4th goal of the season. Nolan Burdett would finish the game with two more goals as well for the hat trick and Garrett Cox would add his second of the game with assists from Chris Bilec and Henry Shin. 


9/22: North Texas (3) vs Texas (7)- The Longhorns looked to continue their 8 game winning streak against the North Division with a two game series against UNT, and the offense did not disappoint. Chris Bilec scored the opener with a wrist shot from center ice, then Ethan Chun added another with assists from Garrett Cox and Chris Bilec. With the period coming to an end, the Longhorns took a 2-0 lead into intermission. 

UNT responded with two quick goals to even up the game. From there, the Longhorns scored four unanswered goals. Alec Pillar and Ethan Chun started the scoring barrage for Texas with Chun scoring the first of three power play goals. 

Despite a 4-2 lead, the Longhorn offense kept going. Garrett Cox scored two magnificent goals of his own to start the 3rd period. Down 6-2, UNT scored a short handed goal only for the Longhorn power play to answer with another goal from Garrett Cox completing the hat trick and the 4th hat trick for the Longhorns in 3 games. The Longhorns would hold on to win 7-3. 


9/23: North Texas (4) vs Texas (9)- With their last TCHC Conference Game until the end of October, the Longhorns looked to complete the sweep for the 2nd straight year against UNT. Shaan Greenberg started the game off with a goal, assisted by Nic Samadian and Joe Kurita. Garrett Cox continued his hot start scoring his 6th goal of the season. Nolan Burdett followed with a goal assisted by Michael Fernandes and Chris Bilec, giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission. 

From there, the Longhorns would take over. Alec Pillar and Chris Bilec started the period off with two quick goals, followed by Garrett Cox and Pillar again- bringing the Longhorn lead to 7-0. UNT would respond with two power play goals and the Longhorns went into intermission with a 7-2 commanding lead on the Eagles. 

The third period would start with a pair of Longhorns completing a hat trick. Garrett Cox would score his third of the game and 8th of the season. Alec Pillar continued the trend scoring his third as well, becoming the 5th Longhorn to score a hat trick in the first four games. Texas would finish the game with a 9-4 win.
