After a three week break that included two forfeit wins against Texas Tech, the Longhorns followed up with two strong wins against TCU. With a combination of strong goaltending and the Longhorn's potent offense, the Longhorns improved to 8-0 in TCHC conference play.
10/27/17: TCU (3) vs Texas (7)- The Longhorns returned from their annual Fall Break with a quick goal five minutes into the period by defenseman Chris Bilec. Driving the puck wide, Bilec was able to cut back to the middle and tuck the puck far side. The rest of the period was controlled by the Longhorns, who outshot TCU 20-8, but failed to break through for a second goal.
Similarly to the first period, the Longhorns started the second period off with a quick back door goal from captain Joe Kurita, assisted by Chris Bilec and Garrett Cox. Minutes later, the Longhorns would take advantage of a TCU holding penalty with their first power play goal of the game from Garrett Cox, assisted by Nolan Burdett and Shaan Greenberg. Continuing the pace from the first period, the Longhorns outshot TCU 20-7 to bring the overall score to 3-0 at the end of the second.
Down 3-0, TCU would not go quietly. The Horned Frogs scored two quick goals to start the third, however, only 10 seconds after bringing the deficit to 1, Alec Pillar scored from the far side assisted by Cox and Kurita to bring the Longhorn lead to 4-2. The Longhorns would continue with their second power play goal of the evening from Garrett Cox, assisted by Chris Bilec. Not satisfied with a 5-2 lead, Junior Michael Fernandes scored his first goal of the season unassisted to bring the lead to 6-2 and put the Longhorns firmly in control. After a TCU goal cut the lead to 6-3, Freshman Shaan Greenberg scored on the empty net for his 6th goal of the season, bringing the Longhorn lead to the final score of 7-3.
10/28/17: TCU (1) vs Texas (9)- After a commanding win the night before, the Longhorns picked up right where they left off. Forward Alec Pillar scored his first of three goals to begin the Longhorn scoring run off a rebound assisted by Joe Kurita and Garrett Cox. Cox would follow up with next Longhorn goal with a shot off of the face-off win by Joe Kurita to bring the Longhorn lead to 2-0 midway through the first period. Assistant Captain Ethan Chun scored the next Longhorn goal with a shot from the point to increase the Longhorn lead to 3-0 going into the first intermission.
The second period continued much like the first, with the Longhorns dominating the pace of play. Chris Bilec added his first of the night with another Longhorn goal scored from the point. Up 4-0, Garrett Cox would add his second of the night off of a feed from Joe Kurita completing the second period with a 5-0 lead.
While Junior goaltender David Hutto had denied every TCU opportunity the first two periods, the Frogs started the third period with a power play goal, their only of the night. From there it was all Longhorns. Alec Pillar added his second of the night unassisted, then the Longhorn power play went to work. Sophomore Kevin Chen scored his 5th goal of the season off of a beautiful feed from Nic Samadian on the power play. Back on the power play again, the Longhorns answered the call again with Chris Bilec scoring off of a feed from Joe Kurita- his 4th assist of the night. With 2:16 left in the game, Alec Pillar completed the hat trick with a power play goal assisted by Nic Samadian and Ethan Chun to bring the game to the final score of 9-1.
The Longhorns continue next weekend against Texas A&M University. The Longhorns go on the road Friday Night, but play the Aggies at home Sunday, 2:00pm, at the HEB Center.
